Can a good father get a second chance of life? 48 year old Fung Kwok Tai nearly died of a heart disease, he was lucky to have a heart transplant from a benevolent donor in 2010. However, his body started rejecting his new heart, he is now relying on an external heart to keep him alive. Fung is hoping for a second benevolent person to extend his life. "It is difficult to strike the jack pot twice, but I have the trust in me, I want to see my son grows up".
Fung worked as an interior designer. In 2000, he was diagnosed as having coronary heart disease. He gave up his job to stay at home. In 2005, his condition was stable and his wife gave birth to a son. The family is not well off, but they managed. In 2010, his condition deteriorated, he had heart surgery twice. Fung said "At that time, I thought I was going to die and leave my son, I really didn't want that to happen. Fortunately, he received a new heart from a benevolent person, he had a new lease of life. When Fung was recovering from the operation, the family lived on their saving and some medical insurance money. In January this year, his condition was stable, he then worked part-time as an interior designer, earning a few thousand dollars a month. He enrolled his son for some extra curriculum activity classes. "We can't afford the private tuition class, but those run by the council are ok". Every morning when he wakes up, he is happy to see his son growing up healthy.
During the Easter period, Fung was admitted to hospital for breathlessness. After the assessment, it was confirmed that his new heart was being rejected and the medication was not working. He is now remained in hospital. "When my son asked me when am I going home? I told him, daddy is fine, I will be alright". Fung has been in hospital for more then two months now.
Mrs. Fung is looking after their son alone, doing the summer holiday school run as well as taking him to the other classes. She visits Fung every day from Sham Shui Po to Queen Mary's Hospital. She helps Fung with his bed bath, massage and feeding. She looks very tired. "He loves his son very much, I will do whatever I can. I need to support him". Fung is awaiting for a donor with type O or type A blood group. "My family works hard for me, I need to see my son grow, I can't be that selfish, letting my wife look after our son on her own."
