A 9 year old girl was home alone in a unit at Rhine House, Hoi Ting Road, Mongkok. She celebrated her 9th birthday by burning candles, leading to the house caught fire. 500 residents were evacuated due to the thick smoke caused by the fire. Some elderly people had to be helped out of the building, luckily no one was hurt. While the police was investigating the cause of fire, they found the 9 year old was home alone.

The girl is named Chan, she was taken to the hospital for examination and later discharged. Her 36 year old father and 32 year old mother were arrested for child abuse under the category of neglect. The incidence happened at about 11:30pm last night. A residence saw smoke coming out from the building, he alerted the security and called the police. The security guard went to the flat and found a frightened 9 year old. He took her away to safety. When the police arrived, they helped a lot of the elderly residents to safety using the stairs. It took the firefighters 15 minutes to put the fire out. The police questioned the 9 year old and found that she was in the room playing with candles. As she has just turned 9, she wanted to celebrate her birthday and was waiting for her parents to return home. She didn't know she nearly killed herself and not aware that it could be a disaster.
