A 14-year-old boy has been admitted to the University of Hong Kong to study science, becoming the youngest student ever enrolled at the 101-year-old institution. Joseph Ng Kwok-chung would start a three-year undergraduate course in the science faculty in September, the university said on Thursday. Ng scored three As in the Hong Kong Advanced Levels Examinations intended for students four years older than he was. He obtained the top grades in chemistry, pure mathematics and physics.
University officials said Ng would not receive any preferential treatment. He would study the same curriculum as other students. His first year would be a general science curriculum before he could choose a more specific subject in the second year. Also gifted in music, Ng said he was looking forward to the university’s music classes. He also said he wanted to make more friends at school. He has studied at International Christian Quality Music Secondary and Primary School, a school designed for exceptional music students in Diamond Hill. In 2009, he won an award in the Hong Kong (Asia Pacific) Grieg and Bartok Piano Competition.
