Young pandas Ying Ying and Lok Lok were trying to "mate" five times in two consecutive days without success. As a result, Ying Ying had an artificial insemination and hopefully, she will be giving birth in July at the earliest. Panda expert said Ying Ying and Lok Lok were together for a while, but they are still very young, and lacking "mating experience". Ying Ying will be monitored closely the next few months. Ocean Park Executive Director of the Ministry of Education Chiang So Shan pointed out that on Valentines Day this year, it was quite noticeable that Ying Ying's vulva area appeared to be red and swollen. Ocean Park had arranged for Ying Ying to stay with Lok Lok for two days. Lok Lok was very active and playful, he was seen climbing on top of Ying Ying on numerous occasions during those two days. Unfortunately, Ying Ying had enough of him, ended up fighting between them. Ocean park have prepared lots of nutritious food for them to replace for their loss of energy.

Dr. Wong Sing Tung, chief medical officer from Wolong China Giant Panda Research Center pointed out that the Lok Lok is young and active, although Ying Ying and Lok Lok did "mate", it was unsuccessful due to lack of experience. In the end the pair ended up fighting each other. Dr Wong added that success rate for panda's first "mating" is only 30% to 50%.
