A man was killed and 26 people injured in a head-on collision between a Discovery Bay shuttle bus and a truck near Tung Chung yesterday morning. The truck driver, surnamed Chan, 26, was trapped in the wreckage for half an hour and suffered serious injuries to the lower half of his body. He was certified dead on arrival at Princess Margaret Hospital. The 41-year-old bus driver, surnamed Tang, and three passengers were seriously injured. Remaining passengers who suffered minor injuries were taken to various hospitals.

Police said the two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions along Cheung Tung Road when they rammed into each other at the junction of Sham Shui Kok Drive. Witnesses said the truck crossed the middle of the road when the driver apparently swerved to avoid a garbage truck emerging from a side street. "We strongly suspect that the truck crossed the line and hit the bus causing it to crash into a roadside fence," said Denis Li Man-kit, senior traffic inspector in New Territories South. "We do not think there was any speeding though the road was wet at the time."

In a separate incident, a truck driver was killed when he was thrown from his vehicle and run over by a passing car in Lok Ma Chau. Police said the 33-year-old driver, surnamed Wong, was traveling on the fast lane of the San Tin Highway toward Sheung Shui at about 1am. He was changing lanes near San Tin when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle. Wong crashed into the back of a container truck that was traveling in the middle lane.

The truck driver was certified dead at the scene. Police superintendent To Wai-ching, of the New Territories North traffic headquarters, said the victim's seat belt may have been unfastened or defective, causing him to be thrown from his vehicle onto the road. The container truck driver was arrested for dangerous driving but later released on bail pending further inquiries.
