Police are hunting a rapist who struck twice within 25 minutes early yesterday. The first of his targets managed to fight her way out of his clutches, but she was left in anguish after her plucky struggle. For she blamed herself for the attack on the second woman, saying that could have been prevented if she had reported to police right after her escape. The successive attacks were just 200 meters apart in Mong Kok. Instead of reporting to police immediately, the 23-year-old salesgirl discussed her ordeal with family and friends. She reported to police after she had been home for 15 minutes. That appears to have given the rapist the opportunity for an attack on a 22-year-old, who was found sobbing in the lobby of Sun Hing Building, a commercial building at 603-609A Nathan Road, shortly before 5am.

She told a security guard she worked at a karaoke nightclub in Sun Hing Building and after finishing work at 4.40am she walked through the building on her way to Portland Street. That was when she was attacked by a man who covered her face with a towel soaked in chloroform. Then she was dragged to a refuse collection point in a back alley beside the building. She fell unconscious but realized she had been raped as she came around. Crying, she staggered to the management office of the building, and a security guard alerted police.

Officers sealed the alley as they sought clues and found the woman's bra. That was taken for examination in the hope of finding a DNA sample of the rapist. A police sniffer dog was also brought in to help in the search. The woman who escaped had been attacked around 4.15am as she was walked home after part-time work at a bar. She fought with the attacker when he tried to cover her face with a towel on the stairway of her flat in Soy Street, Mong Kok. The attacker fled down the stairway as she shouted for help, but no one came to her aid.

The woman said she was terrified and called family members and friends to seek their advice on what to do before she reported to police at 4.34am. She later wrote on her Facebook page that she regretted not informing the police right away as a patrol would have swept the area. It was through Facebook that she learned of the second attack. The man thought to be the two-time attacker is described as being aged from 30 to 40 and 1.6 meters tall. He has short hair and was wearing a white T-shirt and light colored shorts. Police were last night going through CCTV footage from shops and buildings nearby in the hope of spotting him.
