My recent series: The Life and Times of a Sentinel 7.5/10

When I saw the preview of this series I was excited. I had high hopes for this series. It was about time TVB made an ancient series like this. The beginning was OK. As you get towards the middle of the series it was getting annoying. Luckily from the middle on it got better.

The cast did really well. The only two people that I thought did not do well is Power Chan and Evergreen Mak. The moment I saw them in the series, I thought they were not going to play the role very well. Both are good actors but did not fit the characters. Power brought a modernize feeling in his role as emperor. Evergreen seem to have tried way to hard to play his character. Some people think that Kenneth was not convincing in his role as Fuquan. I thought the same in the beginning. As the series went on I thought he did a really good job. Steven Ma played his role well. It would be nice to see him do something different in the future.

I was disappointed of the fight scenes. I thought they were going to be awesome judging from the previews. It's a shame. I was also disappointed with the use of the computerize backgrounds. Anyone could tell it was fake. If they are going to do that they should make it look good. Anyone can spot those backgrounds. There are some parts in this series where I said "Is this essential?" Half of them answer my question and the other half still makes me wonder why it was done anyway. I guess they didn't want parts of the series to drag.

Overall it was a short but great series. It was a bit rush but not enough to make the viewer be upset of what is happening in the series. There are parts where you will question why this or that happen but nothing to make you go nuts. If your a history buff, this series will probably make you mad because of how inaccurate this is...but you should already know this when watching a TVB series. As of now, this is one of the top five series of 2011...that's not saying much. So far 2011 is not a good year for TVB. I would recommend this series. It's only 25 episodes. It's nice to see a series like this created by TVB. It's a huge break from all the modern/heavy love drama out there.
