PCCW made plans to submit application for free tv license

PCCW will submit application for a free TV license

Following CTI and HKCTV, one of Hong Kong major telecommunications operators, PCCW, made a sudden announcement of contending for free TV license. PCCW said in view of its terrestrial and wireless network coverage on the whole Hong Kong territory, coupled with its ability to produce high-quality program content, PCCW decided to apply to the Government for free TV license and will submit the application shortly believing its decision will be consistent with the interests of consumers and viewers.

Earlier, PCCW lost broadcasting right to the Premier League. Some analysts said, if PCCW obtains free tv service license to broadcast content free, PCCW might further weaken the attractiveness of NOW, which was a pay-tv service business, thinning existing resources for pay-tv business and delaying break-even schedule. Also, PCCW did not specify which technology they used for broadcast. If PCCW used existing technology, free tv viewers would have to install another digital box to watch PCCW and those having PCCW broadband connection would have another problem with box cost.
