A jealous husband was yesterday jailed for eight years for stabbing his wife nearly 20 times with a screwdriver. Ketamine abuser Chan Chun-tat, 24, attacked his wife in June last year after suspecting her to be unfaithful, the High Court heard. Justice Verina Saeeda Bokhary handed down the jail term after Chan pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally wounding Chan Sze-ka, 24, in their Tai Po flat. Chan had earlier pleaded not guilty to attempted murder. His wife suffered multiple stab wounds and a severe chest injury and had to stay in hospital for nearly two weeks. She also needed psychiatric treatment after her recovery. Chan's lawyer pleaded for leniency, saying his client was deeply frustrated after learning that his wife had gone out with her male friend. He had also contemplated divorce. The lawyer said the attack was not premeditated. However, Justice Bokhary described the attack as terrifying, saying the court had to fulfill its responsibilities to handle the case in a strict manner. The court earlier heard that Chan and his wife were married in January 2010 and later had a son. On learning her husband was a ketamine user, she tried to commit suicide while she was pregnant. Chan then promised that he would quit. In June last year, Chan learned that his wife had gone out with a male friend and asked her to leave their Tai Po flat. But on June 14, he asked her to return to the flat for a talk. However, before she arrived he took some ketamine. When she planned to leave the flat after the meeting, he suddenly assaulted her with the screwdriver and stabbed her in the chest, back and shoulders. The court heard that the wife has recently forgiven Chan as she realizes he was under the influence of the drug at the time of her assault. She also held back an application filed earlier to divorce him. Don't Forget to click the "THANKS" button This post has been edited by R.E.D: Aug 7 2012, 03:08 AM |
