David Choi: Getting signed to record labels doesn’t mean a lot now

It was a relaxed affair at the press conference of the YouTube Stars Music Festival, where internet sensations David Choi, Jason Chen, Joseph Vincent, Tiffany Alvord, Singapore's very own Clo and Ana Free from Portugal bantered and showed off the easy camaraderie they shared with each other.

The sextet was in town recently for the YouTube Stars Music Festival, held at The Coliseum, Hard Rock Hotel at Resorts World Sentosa.

Already famous and well-loved by fans from around the globe, xinmsn asked the six singers if they hope to score record deals someday, or prefer to continue on their YouTube route.

David started the ball rolling, saying, "Being signed [on a record label] doesn't mean a lot these days. I'm sure we're doing a lot better than people outside. I have friends who've gotten deals, but nothing has happened. YouTube is always changing, so I guess we're just kind of going with the flow."

"I guess there's a misconception that getting signed means you're guaranteed to be successful, and that's really not the case. Sometimes when you're in control of your own YouTube channel and your own career, kind of puts responsibility in your hands and you work harder; sometimes you get a little further," Ana further elaborated.



David's songs were placed in a number of popular Korean dramas, including My Princess and Secret Garden, previously. When asked how he felt about that, the 26-year-singer said it was "awesome", but laughed that he "didn't get paid for it".

"The [Korean music] industry's kind of messy right now, but it's always nice to have your song placed on TV shows or movies. I have one placed right now in Singapore," he said, before adding that having songs placed on shows is good exposure for the artiste.

Fans of David will be delighted to know that his songs is used in Ch8's brand new dating show Date a Star, which stars young talents Ian Fang, Edwin Goh and Kimberly Chia.



All six rose to fame through their covers of songs from famous singers such as Justin Bieber, Adele and Jason Mraz. Jason, who is a Chinese-American, also remade songs by Jay Chou, Lee Hom and JJ Lin.

When asked what advice would they give budding Youtubers, Tiffany started off by telling them "not to give up", and Jason added, "Don't let haters get to you."

"YouTube is a great place for you to get honest feedback. If 90% of your feedback is negative for your performances (pause), I'm pretty sure you should not be doing that," David advised.

Although they are now singers in their own right, David and Joseph recalled the one time when they participated on US talent show America's Got Talent.

"It was very weird; it was like a freak show. On my right side was a juggler," David deadpanned, earning chortles from everyone present.

Joseph added, "I was going up against a trapeze artiste and how do you ... follow that?"
