Angela Chang sued by management companies

Taiwanese artiste Angela Chang has landed herself in a lawsuit with her previous companies, Qing Tian Management Company and Linfair Records, over contractual disputes. The singer is being asked for compensation worth NT $34.65m (S$1.45m) in total.

In 2001, Angela signed a 10-year contract with Qing Tian which “guaranteed” the release of an album every year. Subsequently, her album rights were transferred to the management of Linfair Records.

When her contract was up in 2011, the 31-year-old realized that the accounts were in a mess and decided to end the ties with Qing Tian and Linfair on her own accord. She joined Wonderful Music in the following year and released her latest album, Visible Wings, last October.

Although Angela’s new album was very well received, the two companies concluded that she has breached the original contract and filed for a lawsuit seeking compensation from the singer.

Sources revealed that the prosecutor pointed out Angela’s “offence” on two counts - She failed to release the number of albums stated in the agreement, and her refusal to complete her work schedule resulted in “immeasurable economic loss” for both companies.

Angela’s lawyer denied the charges and proposed to explain the situation in detail. Court proceedings are set to resume on April 2, as both parties were unable to reach a mutual agreement yesterday.

The singer, who did not appear in court yesterday, could not be reached for comment at press time.
